Why is the DAF XG so popular?

What kind of truck is the DAF XG exactly?
The DAF XG is part of DAF’s latest generation for long-haul and heavy transport, together with the DAF XF and DAF XG+. Within this range, the XG clearly sits above the XF in terms of space and appearance, while remaining below the XG+ when it comes to overall height and maximum living space. Officially, DAF states that the XG has a cabin length of 2,690 mm, a standing height of 2,025 to 2,075 mm and a cabin volume of 11.85 m³. The DAF XG+ uses the same cabin length but increases the volume to 12.50 m³ with even more interior height. The DAF XF is more compact with 9.73 m³.
That already explains a large part of the XG’s popularity. You get significantly more truck to live in compared to an XF, without necessarily choosing the largest cabin in the range. This positioning works especially well for international transport, where cabin comfort is essential.
Why the DAF XG is so popular
The first reason is simple: space. DAF designed the new generation with the additional freedom from European regulations on dimensions and weights in mind. This allowed the brand to create a more aerodynamic front while also adding much more interior space. DAF itself describes the XG as “a class of its own”. Reviews also repeatedly mention that the cabin feels like a serious living space rather than just a workplace.
The second reason is efficiency. From launch, DAF positioned the new XF, XG and XG+ as trucks that set a new benchmark for fuel consumption and overall transport efficiency. According to DAF, the combination of aerodynamics, PACCAR MX engines, TraXon transmission, predictive functions and downspeeding can deliver fuel savings of more than 10% compared to the previous generation.
The third reason is safety and visibility. Large windows, low window lines, a kerb-view window, the Digital Vision System and Corner View. For drivers regularly dealing with urban roads, roundabouts, loading docks and tight manoeuvring situations, improved visibility is a major advantage. Less stress while manoeuvring and more confidence in tight spaces make a real difference in daily transport operations.
The fourth reason is driver comfort. The space and storage in the cab are generous, and at 85 km/h, the noise level measures just 64 decibels. DAF itself highlights several comfort features on its XF/XG/XG+ Electric pages, including 80 cm wide beds, extensive storage space, a large folding table and a cabin designed not only for driving, but also for resting and working comfortably.
XG, XF or XG+?
To fully understand the DAF XG, it is best viewed between the DAF XF and DAF XG+. The DAF XF is the compact and rational choice for companies that want the latest generation but place less focus on maximum living space. The DAF XG is the step up for drivers who spend more time living in the cabin and want additional space, height and comfort. The DAF XG+ is the flagship model, designed for those who want the highest possible level of cabin comfort.
Officially, the XG and XG+ share the same cabin length, but the XG+ offers more interior height and overall volume. The XG+ is the most spacious option, while the XG is the logical choice for operators wanting to combine comfort and efficiency in a slightly more compact format. That is exactly why the DAF XG tractor unit is so attractive for many transport companies.
Who is the DAF XG a smart choice for?
The DAF XG is especially suitable for companies and drivers covering long distances, regularly sleeping in the cabin and valuing peace, space and a modern workplace. Think of international transport, general cargo, refrigerated transport and other applications where the truck truly becomes a second working and living environment. This directly matches DAF’s official positioning for long-haul and heavy transport.
What to look for when buying a DAF XG
When looking at a new or used DAF XG, do not focus only on horsepower or year of manufacture. Start with the intended application. A DAF XG 480 is already perfectly suitable for many international transport operations, while a DAF XG 530 becomes more interesting when payload, route profile or personal preference genuinely requires additional power. DAF’s drivetrain strategy is all about smart specification rather than automatically choosing the highest power output.
Next, check the specification and options that really make a difference in everyday use. Think about digital mirrors, ACC, Predictive Cruise Control, a retarder, seat configuration, sleeping comfort, fridge, table and storage space. These features often make the difference between a truck that looks good on paper and one that drivers genuinely enjoy working with.
Also pay close attention to the axle configuration and actual operating history. A 4x2 is a logical choice for many international tractor unit applications, while a 6x2 can make more sense depending on usage and payload profile. In addition, check the maintenance history, software updates, tyres, camera or mirror units, and the overall condition of the interior and cabin.
And then there is the price. A used model costs roughly €40,000 to €75,000. A new model starts from around €95,000. That is a useful starting point, but the real difference almost always lies in the combination of mileage, option package, origin and maintenance history. A truck that initially seems more expensive can ultimately be the better purchase when it has the right specification.
Buying a DAF XG at BAS World
The DAF XG is popular because it does several things exceptionally well at the same time. It offers clearly more cabin space and comfort than a traditional long-haul truck, without automatically pushing buyers towards the absolute top model. It benefits from an aerodynamic design and a modern drivetrain focused on efficiency both in theory and in real-world operation. It performs strongly when it comes to visibility and safety. And for many drivers, it feels like a truck where you not only work, but also live comfortably.
At BAS World, we offer a wide range of new and used DAF XG trucks. Do you have questions about one of the models or about which specification best suits your operations? Contact our specialists. We are happy to help you.
